I Am Rubber, You Are Glue: Resiliency, Human Connection and Addiction

Workshop will focus on the decline in resiliency among adolescents and children. We will discuss how the lack of resiliency has led to negative coping skills, including an increase in substance abuse at an especially young age. Lastly, we will learn how increasing resiliency and the ability to cope with negative emotions will help prevent substance use.

Compassionate Accountability: How Trauma impacts the ability to be accountable and how we can change that!

Early childhood trauma, developmental trauma, or complex trauma changes the brain. Normal brain development does not occur and all behaviors become about survival and protection. The traumatized brain cannot distinguish between shame and guilt, forcing kids into a vicious cycle of repetitive unsafe behaviors. This presentation will discuss ways to counteract these survival techniques prior to expecting responsibility and accountability. We will address how getting the thinking brain online with the emotional brain will allow the youth to learn skills to decrease their safety risk, and ultimately work to repair their relationships.

We Need Your Help: Juvenile Justice and the Response to Sex Trafficking in Nebraska

As Nebraska builds its system to better respond to sex trafficking, we cannot do it without the assistance of our juvenile justice system. This workshop will focus on key facts, laws, and strategies that are used to identify and respond to sex trafficking as a juvenile justice professional. We will learn about the different ways the juvenile justice system intersects with the issue of sex trafficking in Nebraska and explore youth experiences and ways to engage youth who may be experiencing sex trafficking.

Family engagement in services planning and intervention with youth who are justice involved is important and is often difficult to achieve. Workshop participants will be provided practical and interactive opportunities to consider better family engagement in team meetings with justice involved youth. This workshop will offer learning experiences targeted at recognizing and at taking advantage of empirically based core elements of family engagement.
Helping Diverse Populations & Refugees with Trauma

This multifaceted workshop will address the perspective of trauma and cultural challenges on diverse populations including refugees. Dr Betty will look at core challenges refugees and immigrants face as well as cultural adaptation and immigration trauma. Participants will learn about difficulties and challenges that immigrant and refugee families may have faced prior to DHHS or Justice System involvement in the US. Participants will learn strategies for identifying and addressing trauma and mental health needs for immigrant and refugee families. Participants will learn to navigate cultural barriers in order to be effective advocates for immigrant and refugee families.

This is going to be a fun, entertaining, and informative workshop. Participants will be invited to join in improvisation exercises targeted at core skill areas of empathy, listening, non-verbal communication, growth, emotion, and well-being. Improv is often thought of “as if” it is supposed to be funny, however improv is not always funny. The core skills of improv are to know your audience and to ultimately connect with others “onstage” in real and meaningful ways. This workshop will tend to be light-hearted and funny. The core skill areas of Improv are applicable to most serious circumstances of professional and personal functioning and well-being. The workshop will focus on working with justice involved youth and related service systems.
